Eternal Gender and the Plan of Salvation II
NPR put out a new video short called TransMormon about a girl named Eri Hayward. I met Eri back when I was a BYU student in 2008. I didn't know her well, so it was nice to hear about her journey through this documentary.
I think Eri's story unveils some of the issues I mentioned in my last post about transgender issues in Mormonism, but more sincerely and more beautifully than the other news report. In the plan of salvation, there is an interesting pull between the spirit and the body. It is the union of the two that makes up the soul, or the ideal, divine state. But what happens when the spirit and the body don't match? Which one is more important? If we can make the body more perfect to match the spirit, shouldn't we?
As Eri put it, "I don't think I succumbed to my body, I think I succumbed to my spirit."
